Cork County Council has been shortlisted in a total of seven categories for the 2019 Excellence in Local Government Awards. The short-listing for the 16th annual national awards held in conjunction the Dept of Housing, Planning and Local Government was announced yesterday by Chambers Ireland.

The Excellence in Local Government Awards feature 16 categories, showcasing best practice in local government and recognising the skills, hard work, innovation and enthusiasm within local government that can often go unrecognised. This year over 80 projects across Ireland have been shortlisted.

Cork County Council projects shortlisted in the seven award categories include Blackwater and Creativity for Supporting Active Communities, Teen Talk for Health & Wellbeing, Bridge to MassChallenge for Promoting Economic Development, Avoncore Estate Regeneration for Sustainable Environment, Cork County Library’s “A Sound Initiative” for Best Library Service, the West Cork Fit-Ups Theatre Festival for Sustaining the Arts and the Community Fund Scheme for Outstanding Initiative through the Municipal Districts.

The Mayor of the County of Cork, Cllr Christopher O Sullivan welcomed the news, saying “the awards select the very best of local authority projects across Ireland and to have seven Council projects in Cork County shortlisted is a great achievement. It highlights the positive impact of these local projects that are bringing real and meaningful benefits to communities in Cork and recognises innovation and ambitious planning within Cork County Council”

The Excellence in Local Government Award winners will be announced at the 16th annual ceremony on 28th November at the Crowne Plaza Hotel, Northwood, Santry. Awards will be presented for excellence in 16 different categories and one Local Authority will be awarded the overall award and named Local Authority of the Year 2019.
