€1.5 million for sporting organisations in CNW in last two years – O’Shea

€1.5 million for sporting organisations in CNW in last two years – O’Shea

More than €1.5 million has been invested in Cork North West sporting organisations in the last two years through the Sports Capital Programme, according to Cork North West Fine Gael General Election candidate Councillor John Paul O’Shea.

The Sports Capital Programme is operated by the Department of Transport, Tourism and Sport and provides grants to assist in the development or refurbishment of sports facilities and the provision of sports equipment.

The programme was closed under the then Fianna Fáil-led government in 2008 and re-established by the Fine Gael-led government in 2012. In the last two years, dozens of sporting organisations in Cork North West have benefitted from the Programme, to the tune of €1,558,454.

Cllr. O’Shea commented: “Sporting life is right at the very heart of Irish society and the Sports Capital Programme recognises this. With quality facilities and equipment, sporting organisations can continue to grow and increase their influence and popularity in their respective communities. Communities right across Cork North West have received more than €1.5 million in funding for either facilities or equipment in the last two years alone.

“Sports Capital Programme funding has been a priority for Fine Gael and I will work to ensure that worthy sporting organisations across Cork North West are able to upgrade their facilities and purchase necessary equipment in the coming years.”
