Cork County Council will over the coming week formally submit the N72 Ballymaquirke Junction Upgrade Scheme to An Bord Pleanála for its consideration and approval.
The notorious & treacherous junction on the main national route between Mallow and Killarney has been the scene of many road accidents in recent years highlighting it as one of the most dangerous junctions in Cork.
The Cork’s National Roads Office on behalf of Cork County Council & Transport Infrastructure Ireland (TII) has been engaging with consultants in designing the junction upgrade scheme which will involve the construction of a new roundabout at Ballymaquirke junction. A Natura Impact Statement has also been prepared for submission to An Bord Pleanála.
Welcoming the news that the Scheme has now been submitted to An Bord Pleanála, North Cork Fine Gael Councillor John Paul O’Shea said “This is good news for the local community and motorists alike. There are many people travelling from Kanturk to Banteer, or along the N72 from Mallow to Killarney/Millstreet on a daily basis who have to navigate this dangerous junction. I hope An Bord Pleanála will look upon this upgrade scheme favourably and give it the green light as soon as possible”.
Cllr O’Shea added “The significant safety issues at this junction have been a matter of concern to the local community and motorists for many years, and this development is good news for the many people who travel through this junction regularly. We need to keep the momentum going now and get the N72 Ballymaquirke Junction Upgrade Scheme to construction at the earliest possible opportunity”.
