11 Schools in Cork North West to Receive Funding for Climate Action Works – O’Shea

11 Schools in Cork North West to Receive Funding for Climate Action Works – O’Shea

11 Schools in Cork North West will benefit from significant funding as part of the Department of Education’s Climate Action Summer Works Scheme, Fine Gael TD John Paul O’Shea has said.

Deputy O’Shea said the scheme places a strong emphasis on sustainability and modernisation in schools across the region.

Commenting on the announcement, Deputy O’Shea said “I’m delighted to see funding for schools in Cork North West as part of the rollout of the Climate Action Summer Works Scheme. This initiative is essential in helping our schools lower energy use, improve facilities and support the transition to a more climate-friendly education system. This scheme has allowed schools to undertake measures such as insulation upgrades, LED lighting installation, the provision of EV chargers, bike-rack facilities to support active travel, and other climate-focused works alongside traditional maintenance.”

Deputy O’Shea added “In particular, I’m pleased to see funding for so many Schools in Cork North West, where I know these individual schools will benefit greatly from these improvements. Across the country, 297 projects have been approved this year, with €30 million of total funding ring-fenced specifically for the refurbishment of science laboratories. This scheme has placed real priority on upgrading science labs, which is vital as we roll out the new Leaving Certificate science curriculum. Modern, well-equipped labs are essential to ensuring students gain the skills and confidence they need to thrive after they finish school.”

Deputy O’Shea also welcomed confirmation from Minister McEntee that the Climate Action Summer Works Scheme will now be delivered on an annual basis. “This is hugely significant. Regular investment in the upkeep and improvement of our schools will help principals and boards of management plan more effectively for long-term energy and infrastructure needs. I want to congratulate all schools in Cork Northwest that received funding this year and I look forward to seeing the completed works,” concluded Deputy O’Shea.
