The Kanturk/Mallow Municipal District of Cork County Council is to introduce a 30 KM/H speed limit in five housing estates on a pilot basis during 2015 in order to help reduce speed and improve safety for pedestrians, cyclists and especially children.
This initiative, which is being implemented nationwide in all local authorities on a pilot basis arises from a circular issued by the Minister for Transport Pascal Donoghue, TD, in late 2014 responding to a public call for lower speed limits in housing estates throughout the country.
Jake Brennan was a 6-year-old boy who was knocked down by a car and died in his mothers’ arms outside his home in Co Kilkenny on June 12th 2014. Upon discovering that the legal speed limit within most housing estates was 50KM/H, Jake’s mum Roseann, dad Chris and their wider family and friends established Jake’s Legacy in an effort to have this matter addressed locally and nationally.
The estates in which a 30KM/H speed limit be put in place within the Kanturk/Mallow Municipal District are as follows:
- Gouldshill Estate, Mallow
- Eagle View, Banteer
- Drishane View, Millstreet
- St. Theresa’s Place, Kanturk
- Dr. Pat O’ Callaghan Park, Kanturk
Welcoming the initiative, Chairman of the Kanturk/Mallow Municipal District Cllr. John Paul O’ Shea (Ind) said “I very much support this initiative and I believe strongly it will improve safety for pedestrians, cyclists and pedestrians within these estates. If this proposed 30KM/H speed limit is a success, further estates can follow suit in future years”.
Cllr. O’ Shea added “staff from the Kanturk/Mallow Municipal District will in the coming weeks erect the new signage within the estates involved. Local consultation will be key to making this a success and we will be working with all key stakeholders such as resident associations and the Gardaí to ensure we can make this a success”.
