O’Shea Welcomes New Tourism Development Plans For North Cork
Jun 23, 2025
Cork North West Fine Gael TD John Paul O’Shea TD has highlighted the exceptional tourism offerings of North Cork and welcomed significant new initiatives by Fáilte Ireland to develop the region as a premier destination for visitors.
“North Cork represents one of Ireland’s best-kept secrets, offering an unparalleled combination of natural beauty, rich heritage, and authentic Irish experiences,” said Deputy O’Shea. “From the dramatic landscapes of the Blackwater Valley to our vibrant market towns, North Cork provides visitors with the genuine Irish experience they’re seeking.”

The region boasts an impressive array of attractions that showcase Ireland’s finest offerings:
**Natural Wonders**: The Blackwater Valley, often called Ireland’s Rhine, winds through spectacular countryside, while the Nagles Mountains provide breathtaking hiking opportunities. The region’s pristine rivers and lakes offer world-class angling, with the Blackwater renowned globally for its salmon and trout fishing.
**Historic Heritage**: Ancient castles dot the landscape, including the magnificent Kanturk Castle and Buttevant’s medieval ruins. The region’s rich ecclesiastical history is evident in sites like St. Peter’s Church in Rockchapel and the historic abbeys that tell the story of Ireland’s spiritual heritage.
**Authentic Culture**: North Cork’s market towns – Kanturk, Charleville, Newmarket, Millstreet, and Buttevant – each offer unique character and charm. Traditional Irish music sessions, local craft producers, and family-run pubs provide visitors with genuine cultural immersion.
**Outdoor Adventures**: From the North Cork Way to mountain biking in Ballyhoura, North Cork caters to adventure seekers. The region’s extensive walking trails, including sections of the Blackwater Way, offer experiences for all fitness levels.

Welcoming New Development Initiatives, Deputy O’Shea expressed strong support for Fáilte Ireland’s commitment to developing North Cork through comprehensive planning initiatives in conjunction with Cork County Council.
“I warmly welcome Fáilte Ireland’s plans to develop a destination and experience development plan specifically for North Cork,” he stated. “This strategic approach will ensure our region’s unique offerings are properly showcased and developed sustainably for future generations.”
The TD particularly praised Fáilte Ireland’s creation of specialized itineraries highlighting North Cork’s attractions. “These carefully crafted itineraries will help visitors discover the hidden gems of our region, from scenic drives through the Blackwater Valley to cultural trails connecting our historic towns. This professional approach to tourism development recognizes North Cork’s potential as a destination in its own right.”
