O’Shea Urges Clubs to Prepare for Upcoming Community Sports Facilities Fund

O’Shea Urges Clubs to Prepare for Upcoming Community Sports Facilities Fund

John Paul O’Shea, Fine Gael TD for Cork North West, is encouraging all sports clubs across the constituency to begin preparations ahead of the anticipated opening of the next round of the Community Sports Facilities Fund, formerly known as the Sports Capital and Equipment Fund, which is expected to launch in early June.

Highlighting the importance of the scheme, Deputy O’Shea described it as “a vital funding opportunity for clubs right across Cork North West, supporting the development of facilities, the purchase of equipment, and accessibility improvements that benefit entire communities.”

“With the next round expected shortly, I would strongly encourage clubs to act now so they are in the best possible position to submit a strong and complete application as soon as the scheme opens,” Deputy O’Shea said.

The Department of Culture, Communications and Sport has recently updated information on the programme, which is available online, providing helpful guidance for applicants.

“This funding stream has made a real difference to clubs over the years, and early preparation can significantly improve a club’s chances of success,” he added.

Deputy O’Shea advised clubs to take the following key steps in advance:

  • Update OSCAR details – Ensure all club information and contact details are current on the OSCAR system.

  • Register if needed – Clubs that have not applied previously must register on OSCAR before applying.

  • Gather documents early – Clubs should begin compiling necessary documentation, including proof of ownership or long-term lease, cost estimates or quotes, letters of support from their National Governing Body, and details of their own financial contribution.

  • Check planning requirements – While planning permission may not always be required at application stage, having it in place where necessary will strengthen an application.

  • Plan your project now – Clubs should clearly define their proposed project, ensure it aligns with the scheme criteria, and outline realistic costs.

  • Set up a small committee – Assigning a dedicated group to manage the application process can help ensure it is completed efficiently and thoroughly.

“Applications are assessed on a scoring basis, so submitting a full and accurate application is essential,” Deputy O’Shea said. “Taking the time now to prepare will stand to clubs when the fund opens.”

Deputy O’Shea also offered support to local organisations throughout the process.

“If any club needs advice or assistance, I would encourage them to contact my office. My team and I are more than happy to help in any way we can.”

Concluding, Deputy O’Shea wished all clubs the very best in their preparations.

“This is an excellent opportunity for clubs across Cork North-West, and I look forward to seeing strong applications from communities throughout the constituency,” he said.
