Cllr. Trish Murphy Expresses Deep Concern Over Removal of 24-Hour ATM in Newmarket
May 18, 2026
Newmarket based Fine Gael Councillor Trish Murphy has expressed her deep disappointment following the removal of the 24-hour ATM service in Newmarket.
The ATM, which had been operated by Brink’s following the closure of the local AIB branch a number of years ago, provided an important and reliable service for residents, businesses and visitors in the area.
Speaking on the issue, Cllr. Murphy said “I am extremely disappointed to learn of the removal of the 24-hour ATM in Newmarket. Since the closure of the AIB branch a number of years ago, this ATM operated by Brink’s provided an important service for local people, businesses, older residents and visitors to the town. Its removal without any consultation with the community is deeply frustrating and raises real concerns about access to cash and banking services in rural towns like Newmarket.”
“Access to cash remains critically important for many people, particularly older residents, small businesses and those who may not have access to or confidence in online banking services. Rural communities should not continue to lose essential services without engagement or explanation.”
Cllr. Murphy confirmed that she will now be raising the matter directly with the relevant parties in an effort to seek clarity on the decision and explore options to restore the service.
“I will be following up on this matter as a priority to establish why this decision was taken and to see what can be done to restore this essential service for the community,” she added.
Supporting Cllr. Murphy’s concerns, Cork North West Fine Gael TD John Paul O’Shea said the removal of the ATM highlights the ongoing erosion of banking and financial services in rural Ireland.
Deputy O’Shea said “I fully support the concerns raised by Cllr. Trish Murphy regarding the removal of this important ATM service in Newmarket. Communities across rural Ireland continue to see a reduction in essential banking services and this is having a real impact on people’s daily lives. Access to cash remains vitally important for many individuals, families and businesses, particularly in rural towns. The removal of this ATM without any consultation is deeply disappointing.”
“I will be raising this matter in the Dáil and seeking clarity from those involved as to why this decision was taken and what can be done to ensure the people of Newmarket continue to have access to essential banking services locally.”
