New Scrappage Scheme will drive EV Transition

New Scrappage Scheme will drive EV Transition

A new scrappage scheme for cars will provide a major boost to electric vehicle uptake across Ireland, according to Fine Gael TD John Paul O’Shea.

Deputy O’Shea said the new scheme, which will offer families up to €8,500 towards replacing an older petrol or diesel vehicle, represents a significant step in helping more people make the transition to electric vehicles.

Deputy O’Shea said “For too long, the upfront cost of going electric has been the biggest obstacle for ordinary families. Lowering that cost through initiatives like this is a practical way of helping motorists who want to make the switch to electric.”

The scheme will target vehicles aged 13 years or older, helping to remove some of the most polluting cars from Irish roads while reducing emissions and improving air quality.

Deputy O’Shea added “By targeting older vehicles, we can make real progress in lowering emissions while also helping families access cleaner, more affordable transport options. The scheme is rightly focused on those who depend on their car every single day and cannot fall back on public transport. These are the households where the financial barrier is felt most acutely, and where targeted support will make the biggest difference.”

He also highlighted the importance of supporting rural communities through the transition to electric vehicles.

“Many communities across Cork rely heavily on private cars because of limited public transport options and longer commuting distances. It’s essential that these areas are supported as we continue the move towards cleaner transport.”

Deputy O’Shea said the scrappage initiative forms part of a wider package of measures aimed at accelerating electric vehicle adoption, including changes to EV grant supports.

“This year has again highlighted the urgent need to reduce our dependence on fossil fuels. Government incentives are playing a crucial role in helping Ireland meet our climate goals, and this scheme is a clear example of practical measures that can make a real difference for families and for the environment.”
