The Back to School Clothing & Footwear allowance is automatically paid to many families. If you are paid automatically, you don’t need to apply. You will get a notification on MyWelfare if you have been paid automatically.
Back to School Clothing and Footwear Allowance will be paid automatically during the week beginning 10th July.
If you don’t get a notification you can apply for the payment until 30 Sept 2023.
The rates of payment for 2023 have been increased by €100 per child to €260 for children aged 4 – 11 and to €385 for children aged 12 years and over in second level education.
Who Qualifies?
To qualify for Back-to-School Clothing and Footwear Allowance, you must meet the following conditions:
· you must be in receipt of a qualifying social protection payment or participating in an approved employment, education, or training support scheme
· you must be in receipt of an increase for a qualified child (IQC) in respect of each child for whom the allowance is being claimed (except in certain circumstances)
· each child being claimed for must be:
aged between 4 and 17 or
aged between 18 and 22, and returning to second-level education in the autumn
Income Limits for 2023:
Your total household income must be less than the amounts set out in the total income limits below.
- 1 child – €642
- 2 Children – €692
- 3 Children – €742
- 4 Children – €792

How to Apply
If you are not paid automatically , you can apply for the Back-to-School Allowance online at mywelfare.ie
MyWelfare, Department of Employment Affairs and Social Protection – Online Services
You will be asked for the following information:
- Your claim or payment details – information on the payment you currently receive.
- You Children’s details – name , date of birth and PPS numbers
- Your financial situation- Questions about income, savings and investments you or your partner might have.
