Statement from Cllr. John Paul O’ Shea on retention of Postal Service in Ballydesmond village
It was great to get a call from the Postmistress in Ballydesmond Mrs. Vaughan this afternoon to say she has heard from An Post in Cork who have confirmed to her that a postal service will continue in Ballydesmond. This is great news for Ballydesmond and for the catchment area it serves.
The contract for the postal service in Ballydesmond will be advertised as of tomorrow with a closing date for expressions of interest in mid March. Mrs. Vaughan has kindly offered to stay on until this process is complete.
It just goes to show when a community rallies behind it’s own community that it can win the biggest of fights. Particular thanks must go to Mrs. Vaughan for her honesty with the community of Ballydesmond and her commitment for decades on providing such as vital and social service.
One clear message comes out of today though is wherever the post office goes in Ballydesmond or any other village, it must be supported in order for it to be viable.
Today is a very positive for Ballydesmond. However, this evening sheds another cloud over another village in North Cork with the announcement of the voluntary closure of Knocknagree Post Office in the coming weeks.
