Book on Heritage Castles of County Cork – Submissions welcome until 19th June 2017

Book on Heritage Castles of County Cork – Submissions welcome until 19th June 2017

The County of Cork is steeped in heritage, particularly with regard to the castles that dot and indeed define the landscape. Since the arrival of the Normans, right up to the 17th century some wonderful castles have been constructed and theirs is a fascinating history that deserves to be told.

Following on from the success of the Heritage of County Cork Publication Series (which received a citation of excellence in the Local Government Awards), the latest installation in the series sets out to tell the story of Cork’s many fascinating castles and indeed their associated families; also touching on a range of typical castle features; including fine examples that can be visited today across the County.

One of the most important elements of this publication, if not the most important, is the input of local heritage groups and enthusiasts. Past publications in the Heritage of County Cork Series have benefited hugely from a great number of public submissions including photos for use, stories, and indeed lists of recommended sites that should be featured in the book(s).

With respect to the Heritage Castles of County Cork, the Heritage Unit would be delighted to see a similar response in 2017. If there are any Castles in your area that you feel would warrant inclusion in the publication we would welcome any specific information/stories/photos that you may have to share and such details can be emailed to conor.nelligan@corkcoco.ie and/or martin.millerick@corkcoco.ie. All submissions will be given due consideration and it is anticipated that a significant number will feature in the publication.

Should you be interested in engaging with the Heritage Unit of Cork County Council on this project please submit any and all comments, details and photos by the extended closing date of Monday 19th June 2017. A number of submissions have already been made to date and the Heritage Unit is most appreciative of same.
