Oct 06, 2026
Budget 2027 will cut the maximum cost of childcare by more than €1,800 a year for families in Cork, Cork North West Fine Gael TD John Paul O’Shea has said.
Deputy O’Shea said the measures announced today by Fine Gael leader, Tánaiste and Minister for Finance Simon Harris, which will reduce the maximum monthly cost of childcare from €735 to €550 for children up to senior infants.
“Ireland’s economy is strong, and the Government’s job is to make sure people feel that strength in their everyday lives. For parents in Cork, nothing hits the household budget harder than childcare,” Deputy O’Shea said.
From September, the maximum cost will fall by €185 a month, saving families in Cork more than €1,800 a year. Tax relief for childminders will also rise from €15,000 to €20,000.
“Parents are working hard and doing everything right, but childcare bills can take a huge bite out of their pay packet. This Budget puts that money back where it belongs, with families,” Deputy O’Shea said
“Fine Gael promised to reward hard work and cut the cost of everyday life, including childcare. That is exactly what we are delivering.”
Deputy O’Shea concluded by saying the measures show the Government is focused on helping people who work hard to get ahead, not just get by.
“We are using the resources we have to make life more affordable for parents, while protecting the public finances for the long term. This is a Budget for working families in Cork.
