Cork North West Fine Gael General Election Candidate Councillor John Paul O’Shea has welcomed plans by Iarnrod Eireann to improve parking facilities and public transport set down areas at Millstreet Train Station.
Welcoming the news, Cllr. O’Shea said “The plans, which aim to enhance accessibility and increase parking facilities, include a range of important improvements and represents a significant step forward for the community in Millstreet.”
“We need to make sure facilities like Millstreet Train Station are improved and made more accessible allowing it to grow and be more user friendly for its customers. I fully support these improvements and look forward to seeing this progress over the coming months.”
Iarnrod Eireann have submitted a planning application to Cork County Council for the partial demolition and relocation of stone walls at the entrance to the train station to widen the current vehicular access, an extension to the existing car park creating 66 new car parking spaces, along with seven EV charging stations and five accessible parking bays. In addition to this, ten new bike parking spaces are proposed.
Cllr O’Shea added “What I think is most important is connecting Millstreet Train Station with the Town and other public transport. With the new plans, a pedestrian crossing point will link the bus interchange area with the train station. It is vital that these amenities are seamlessly connected and utilised properly.
“It will also better connect the people of Millstreet and the greater Cork North West area to the rest of Ireland, making it easier for passengers to complete their journeys without long waits or unnecessary travel. A well-planned transport hub also improves accessibility for people who may rely on public transport, including those without private vehicles or those with mobility challenges.
“It will also bring more foot traffic to Millstreet, making it easier for customers to reach shops, services, and attractions. A strong public transport system stimulates growth and investment in rural areas, which is crucial for the steady development of Cork North West”, Cllr. O’Shea concluded.
