The Gardens of Mallow Castle and Mallow Town Park are set to become major public amenities in North Cork.
Cork County Council has recently tendered for a Consultant Landscape Architect-Led Multidisciplinary Design Team to prepare and obtain full planning permission for the development of the existing gardens and historic landscape at Mallow Castle together with the main Mallow Town Park as high quality public amenity and year-round visitor destinations. The tender also requires the team to strengthen the connectivity of Mallow Castle & Town Park with the town and to maximise the use of the parks for the people of Mallow and visitors to the town in a sensitive, safe, sustainable, attractive, harmonious and all-inclusive manner.
Welcoming the news of progress with the development of the Gardens at Mallow Castle and Mallow Town Park, local Independent Councillor John Paul O’ Shea said “This is a very exciting development for Mallow and indeed the North Cork region. Cork County Council had the foresight to purchase these beautiful amenities in recent years and must be commended for same. We are now embarking on a new and very exciting time for Mallow in the further development of both these facilities”.
Cork County Council purchased Mallow Castle and parklands in 2011 followed on by the purchase of Mallow Town Park in 2015. Since then, the grounds of Mallow Castle were opened to the public following recent works to the entrance, avenue, pathways and public lighting within the Castle grounds. Mallow Castle is host to many events during the year such as the Racing Home for Easter Festival, Picnic in the Park and Mallow’s Christmas Fair to mention just a few. Mallow Town Park has recently undergone maintenance works to open up the Park to the wider public.
Cllr. O’ Shea added “This is an opportunity of a lifetime for Mallow. Once the Design Team has been appointed in the coming weeks, I look forward to engaging with them on the full design of these works and I would encourage the general public to also engage in this process which will be made available to the people of Mallow during the planning process. These facilities are just wonderful for our town and we all need to be involved and supportive in bringing these amenities to fruition”.
