County Mayor welcomes announcement of first transatlantic service from Cork

County Mayor welcomes announcement of first transatlantic service from Cork

The Mayor of the County of Cork Cllr. John Paul O’ Shea has warmly welcomed the announcement by Norwegian Air International to commence the first ever scheduled transatlantic service from Cork.

Norwegian will operate a direct Cork-Boston service from next May. Cork Airport has long sought a service to the United States and its customers will now be able to fly direct from Cork to Boston next year. Norwegian also intends to operate a new Cork-New York service in 2017. A Cork-Barcelona service is also planned from May 2016.

Welcoming the new services, Mayor O’ Shea applauded the work done by the management at Cork Airport and Norwegian to copper-fasten the new transatlantic routes. “Cork County is unparalleled as a tourist and business destination and has been isolated from a transatlantic perspective for far too long. I am absolutely thrilled with this announcement and commend all involved for their hard work in making it happen. It is high time that the fantastic product that is Cork is accessible to tourists and to the United States business community. As Mayor, I feel very proud of Cork and would be delighted to welcome US visitors to the beautiful county of Cork via Cork Airport”.

Cork Airport is the international gateway to the south of Ireland and is uniquely positioned at the start of the Wild Atlantic Way and Ireland’s Ancient East. More than 2 million passengers travel through Cork Airport each year, flying to key destinations across the UK and throughout continental Europe.
