Fuel Allowance to benefit 470,000 homes this Winter

Fuel Allowance to benefit 470,000 homes this Winter

Fuel allowance payments begin Monday and a major expansion of the scheme means a quarter of all homes in the country now qualify, Cork North West Fine Gael TD John Paul O’Shea has said.

Chair of the Oireachtas Committee on Social Protection, Deputy John Paul O’Shea said, “The 2026/27 Fuel Allowance season starts on September 28th, and every eligible household should apply, as it is still not too late.”

The weekly payment rate is €38, paid over 28 weeks. In recent years the scheme has been significantly expanded so more older people can qualify.

“If you’re over 66, you can have a weekly income of up to €534 – or €1,068 for a couple – and still qualify for the fuel allowance,” Deputy O’Shea said.

Following a further expansion earlier this year, families in receipt of the Working Family Payment will now automatically qualify. Recipients can choose to receive the payment weekly or in two lump sums, and do not need to reapply each year if their circumstances and underlying payment remain unchanged.

“Energy prices are a major concern for people, and I’d encourage anyone who thinks they may be eligible to check the criteria and apply,” Deputy O’Shea said.

“This expansion means almost half a million homes will qualify for Fuel Allowance this winter. As part of Budget 2027, it’s important we look at how we can further support people with their energy bills through the scheme.”
