Housing Targets for Cork County Increased – O’Shea
Jul 30, 2025
The annual housing target to be delivered by Cork County Council has been increased this week to meet the growing demands in County Cork.
Cork North West Fine Gael TD John Paul O’Shea said it was extremely important that this new yearly target of 3,837 homes is delivered annually between now and 2034 and even surpassed by the local authority.
The number of homes to be built by the taxpayer funded council has increased from a target of 2,437 to 3,837. The Government decision follows from the revised National Planning Framework.
“This will provide more people here in Cork County with home to live in and start a family. Housing is the biggest issue facing the country and Fine Gael are absolutely determined to deliver more homes.
“I’m working with my party colleague Minister John Cummins to deliver these homes here in Cork with our officials in Cork County Council,” Deputy O’Shea said.
Cork County Council is expected to reflect these new targets by updating their individual development plans.
“We keenly await the publication of these new development plans. We all know there are challenges across the building sector to deliver these but we are absolutely determined to do so.
“Fine Gael is working to ensure energy, waste-water facilities, and transport infrastrure is in place for these new homes in Cork County. Any obstacle to prevent us achieving these homes simply has to be overcome,” Deputy O’Shea said.
Minster John Cummins said, “Local authorities now have clarity on what land they need to zone to reach their housing growth requirements in order to deliver much-needed homes for individuals and families.
“The Guidelines also enable local authorities to apply headroom of up to 50pc – providing the scope for ‘additional provision’ in excess of the baseline housing growth requirement. This is in recognition of the urgent need to increase housing delivery and because for a variety of reasons, a significant proportion of zoned lands are not activated over the period of a development plan.
“It is imperative local authorities act as soon as possible on updating their city and county development plans, bringing forward further land for much needed residential development,” Minister Cummins said.
