Major Boost for an Athletics Track in Mallow with €2,000,000 in Funding

Monday 4th November 2024

FG Cork North West candidate says the funding is a huge boost for the area

Funding of €2,000,000 for an athletics track in Mallow demonstrates the government’s commitment to sport and will have an enormous impact on communities across the county, Cork North West Fine Gael General Election candidate Councillor John Paul O’Shea has said.

The funding was announced under the Large Scale Sport Infrastructure Fund, which aims to improve and increase active participation in sport across the country.

Cllr. O’Shea said: “I am delighted to receive confirmation of this boost for an athletics track in Mallow.

“Mallow is set to benefit from €2,000,000 for a new athletic track. This will have a positive impact for many years to come and build a lasting legacy of sport.

“A new ‘use it or lose it’ rule is being implemented to ensure there will be timely delivery of these projects, guaranteeing the people of Cork will benefit from the projects in the near future.

“We are all well aware of the advantages of participating in sport on our mental and physical health, but also of the positive impact it has on our communities.

“This funding will help everyone in Cork to access high-quality sports facilities, regardless of background or ability.

“Everybody deserves to have the opportunity to feel the benefits of sport, and I am pleased to see there was a particular focus in these applications on ensuring equal access for men and women as well as those with a disability.

“Watching the Olympics this summer, our talented athletes gave us all something to cheer about. Investment in sports facilities at this scale will help inspire the next generation of athletes, Olympians, and medallists.

“Large scale projects like these become crucial hubs of towns and villages, and communities in Cork will also benefit from the economic and social boosts that will come from their delivery.

“I have worked closely with sports clubs across Cork to if elected to Dáil Éireann will make sure their value continues to be recognised at a national level.

“Fine Gael is committed to supporting Cork communities and this funding is a huge investment in supporting the continuation of the positive contribution of sport.

“I look forward to seeing these projects progress and to see the sporting legacy they will leave in Cork for many years and decades to come,” Cllr. O’Shea concluded.
