Minister for Health Opens New Extension at Mallow General Hospital
Jun 09, 2026
Cork North West Fine Gael TD John Paul O’Shea has warmly welcomed the official opening of the new extension at Mallow General Hospital, describing it as a major milestone for healthcare provision in North Cork and a significant investment in the future of the region’s health services.
The new extension, officially opened by Minister for Health Jennifer Carroll MacNeill TD, includes 24 additional inpatient beds, increasing the hospital’s total bed capacity from 71 to 95 beds.
Welcoming the development, Deputy O’Shea said, “This is a hugely significant day for Mallow General Hospital and for the people of North Cork. The addition of 24 new beds will strengthen local healthcare services, improve patient flow throughout the region, and ensure more patients can receive high-quality care closer to home.”
Deputy O’Shea said the expansion demonstrates the Government’s commitment to investing in healthcare infrastructure and supporting the continued growth of Mallow General Hospital.
“Mallow General Hospital plays a vital role within the healthcare system across Cork and the wider South West. This investment will help ease pressure on larger acute hospitals while ensuring patients can continue their recovery in a modern, comfortable setting closer to their families and communities.”
The Cork North West TD also welcomed the fact that the development includes additional single rooms, which enhance patient privacy, dignity, and infection prevention standards.
“Modern healthcare facilities are about much more than increasing capacity. They are about improving the patient experience and ensuring care is delivered in the most appropriate environment possible. The provision of additional single rooms is a very positive development for both patients and staff.”
Deputy O’Shea noted that the extension builds on previous investment in the hospital, including the completion of Phase One of the expansion programme in 2023, which delivered 48 single-occupancy rooms.
“This latest phase represents another important step forward in the ongoing development of Mallow General Hospital. It ensures the hospital is well-positioned to meet growing healthcare demands while continuing to deliver excellent patient care.”
The Fine Gael TD also paid tribute to the management and staff of Mallow General Hospital for their continued commitment to serving patients across North Cork.
“The dedication and professionalism of the hospital’s staff are at the heart of everything that happens in Mallow General Hospital. This investment will support them in their work and provide them with the facilities they need to continue delivering outstanding care.”
Concluding, Deputy O’Shea said, “Mallow General Hospital occupies a special place in the hearts of people throughout North Cork. Today’s opening marks a significant achievement for the hospital, its staff, and the wider community. I look forward to seeing the positive impact these additional beds will have for patients and families across the region for many years to come.”
