New Watermains for troubled scheme in Gortmore area of Lombardstown

Irish Water has this week approved €85,000 for the replacement of just under 1km of debilitating watermains in the Gortmore area of Lombardstown. This follows severe pressure from local Cllr. John Paul O’ Shea (Ind) and the local community who have been out of water more times that with it in recent months.

Welcoming the funding for the new watermains, Cllr. John Paul O’ Shea who is Chairman of the Kanturk Municipal District of Cork County Council said “I have been fighting the case of replacing these mains with Cork County Council and Irish Water over the last twelve months and I am delighted to report that Irish Water has just this week approved €85,000 to replace the entire watermain from what is know locally as Kelly’s farm to the main Gortroe/Banteer road. The substandard 2” HDPE piping will be replaced with 4” PVC watermain”.

The news will come as a great relief to residents in the area who have suffered so much in recent months and years. Works are due to commence in the coming weeks with the aim of the scheme being finished by the end of this summer.

Cllr. O’ Shea added “I have been very conscious of the hardship residents in the Gortmore and Cregane areas of Lombardstown have had to endure over the last 12 months with not knowing if they had water in the tap when they got up in the morning. There is one particular stretch of road where the pipes here are more or less rotting away and need to be urgently addressed. Confirmation that these pipes will now be replaced is a very welcomed one and something Irish Water needs to focus on more in the future if they expect people to pay their water charges”.
