O’Shea Welcomes Approval of Funding for Flood Relief Works in Ballingeary

Fine Gael TD for Cork North West, Deputy John Paul O’Shea, has welcomed the Office of Public Works’ approval of funding for important flood mitigation works in Ballingeary, Co Cork.

The OPW has confirmed that it has approved Cork County Council’s application for funding under its Minor Flood Mitigation Works and Coastal Protection Scheme. A total of €82,021 has been allocated to advance targeted flood relief works in the village.

The works will include selectively clearing bankside trees and scrub from The Ford area, from the Inchinossig Bridge to the Bunsheelin River and on the Bunsheelin River from the GAA Pitch to confluence with the River Lee.

Deputy O’Shea said the approval is a welcome and timely investment for the local community. “Flooding has been a persistent challenge for Ballingeary and the surrounding areas, and this funding marks another step forward in addressing those risks. The OPW’s support for these works will help improve the river channel, protect local homes and businesses, and give the community greater peace of mind during periods of heavy rainfall.

I want to acknowledge Cork County Council for their proactive application and the OPW for recognising the importance of these targeted works. I will continue to work with both bodies to ensure that these improvements are delivered without delay.”

Deputy O’Shea added that continued investment through national flood relief programmes is essential for rural communities across Cork North West. “Communities like Ballingeary rely on these schemes to protect their homes, livelihoods, and infrastructure. I will continue advocating for further flood mitigation and resilience projects across the constituency.”
