O’Shea Welcomes Completion of New Footpath and Drainage Works at Turnpike Cross, Doneraile

Cork North-West Fine Gael TD Deputy John Paul O’Shea has welcomed the completion of new footpath and drainage works at Turnpike Cross in Doneraile by Cork County Council, with the cross itself also set to be fully resurfaced in the coming weeks.

The works have addressed a long-standing concern for local residents, pedestrians and patrons of businesses in the area, with significant concerns raised in recent months and years about the condition and layout of the footpath.

Deputy O’Shea said the previous footpath was effectively at the same level as the road, which contributed to significant water lodging during periods of heavy rainfall and created difficulties for pedestrians using the area.

“I am very pleased to see these works completed by Cork County Council at Turnpike Cross in Doneraile.

“This was an issue that had been raised with me by local people on a number of occasions. The fact that the footpath was at almost the same level as the road meant that water was regularly lodging on the footpath, particularly during periods of heavy rain.

“This was not only an inconvenience for pedestrians and local residents, but also created a particular concern for anyone accessing businesses and services in the area. The new footpath works, together with the drainage improvements, will make a significant difference to the area. It is important that our local infrastructure is maintained to a good standard and that issues which affect people on a daily basis are addressed.

“I am also pleased to confirm that the cross itself is due to be fully resurfaced in the coming weeks. When completed, this will provide a much-improved surface and finish to the entire area. I want to thank the local residents and businesses who raised their concerns and, importantly, Cork County Council and its staff for responding and delivering these works. It is a good example of how engagement between local communities, public representatives and the local authority can lead to practical improvements on the ground.”

Local Fine Gael Councillor Kay Dawson also welcomed the completion of the works.

“I am delighted to see these works completed at Turnpike Cross. This was an issue that had been causing frustration for local people for some time, particularly because of the water lodging on the footpath and the difficulties this caused for pedestrians.

“The new footpath and drainage works are a very welcome improvement and will make the area safer and more accessible for everyone using it. I am also very pleased that the full resurfacing of the cross is due to take place in the coming weeks. Once that is completed, we will see a significant overall improvement to Turnpike Cross.

“I want to thank the local residents and businesses who highlighted the problems and worked with us in getting these issues addressed, as well as Cork County Council for carrying out the works. It is important that we continue to focus on these smaller but very important local projects which can make a real difference to communities.”
