O’Shea Welcomes Funding for N72 Clonbannin Pavement Strengthening Works

O’Shea Welcomes Funding for N72 Clonbannin Pavement Strengthening Works

Cork North West Fine Gael TD John Paul O’Shea has warmly welcomed confirmation that the N72 Clonbannin Pavement Strengthening Scheme is scheduled to commence on 5 January 2026.

The scheme covers approximately 2.5km of the N72, beginning at the eastern extent of the N72 Meenskeha Overlay Scheme (Phase 1) and continuing to just before the bridge east of Clonbannin Cross. Michael Cronin Sand and Gravel Ltd from Killarney, County Kerry has been awarded the contract which comes to just over €3m.

Welcoming the news, Deputy O’Shea said “This is an important and very welcome investment in a key stretch of the N72. Road users in the area are aware of the condition of this section, and these strengthening and resurfacing works will significantly improve safety, comfort and reliability for motorists, cyclists, and local residents alike.”

The works will involve the removal of failed sections of pavement, strengthening of those sections, and resurfacing with bituminous macadam. The project also includes site clearance, drainage improvements, kerbing, road markings and traffic management measures. A temporary speed limit of 60km/h will be in place within the works area for the duration of the project. A stop/go convoy system will also be used to manage traffic through the works zone.

Deputy O’Shea added “While there will inevitably be some disruption during construction, these short-term inconveniences will deliver long-term benefits in terms of safer, stronger road infrastructure. I would encourage motorists to allow extra time for journeys, to obey the temporary speed limits and to follow the instructions of the traffic management teams. I will continue to work with the relevant authorities to ensure this project is delivered as efficiently as possible and to advocate for further investment in our regional and national road network.”
