O’Shea Welcomes Targeted Government Measures to Reduce Fuel and Energy Costs
Mar 24, 2026
Deputy John Paul O’Shea TD has welcomed the package of targeted measures announced by Government today to help reduce the cost of fuel and energy for households and businesses.
Deputy O’Shea said the supports come at a critical time as families, workers and businesses continue to face significant cost pressures arising from global instability and rising energy prices.
“I welcome today’s decision by Government to introduce temporary and targeted measures that will have a real and immediate impact on the cost of living. The reduction in excise duty on petrol and diesel, alongside the lowering of the NORA levy, will help bring down prices at the pump for motorists, farmers and businesses,” he said.
The Cork North West TD also highlighted the importance of supports for the haulage and transport sector.
“The increase in the Diesel Rebate Scheme is particularly important for the haulage and passenger transport sectors, which play a vital role in keeping our economy moving and supply chains functioning. These measures will provide much-needed relief to operators who have been under sustained pressure due to rising fuel costs,” he added.
Deputy O’Shea also welcomed the extension of the Fuel Allowance.
“The extension of the Fuel Allowance by an additional four weeks is a very important intervention that will support approximately 470,000 households across the country, including many in Cork. This additional €152 will make a meaningful difference for those most at risk of energy poverty,” he said.
Deputy O’Shea noted that while these measures will provide short-term relief, continued investment in energy security and sustainability remains essential.
“It is clear that we must continue to reduce our reliance on imported fossil fuels. Investment in renewable energy, retrofitting and strengthening our national grid is key to protecting households and businesses from future price shocks. I welcome the Government’s ongoing commitment in this regard,” he said.
Concluding, Deputy O’Shea said the Government will continue to monitor the situation closely.
“These are time-bound and targeted supports, and it is important that Government remains responsive as circumstances evolve. Today’s announcement strikes the right balance in supporting those under the most pressure while continuing to plan for a more secure and sustainable energy future.”
