People in Cork encouraged to apply for a GP Visit Card

All families in Cork should check if they qualify for a GP Visit Card, an important initiative designed to ensure greater access to essential healthcare services across the country, Fine Gael TD John Paul O’Shea for Cork North West has said.

Deputy O’Shea said that as of August 2025 nearly 90,000 people in Cork have a GP Visit Card.

As of 1^st August 2025, there were over three quarters of a million GP Visit Card holders throughout the country who can visit their GP free of charge, removing a financial barrier for many individuals and families in accessing care.

“This initiative is fantastic to see, and shows Fine Gael is committed to alleviating the financial burden associated with healthcare costs in Cork,” said Deputy O’Shea

“The GP visit card scheme is open to a broad range of applicants. For most, eligibility is based on income thresholds and family circumstances. Children under 8 years of age and those aged 70 or more are automatically eligible for a card.

“Many people are not aware that they may qualify, and the Minister for Health urges everyone to review the criteria.

“Fine Gael is all about putting money back in your pocket. I would urge all Cork residents to consider applying now as it could provide annual savings of €600 for a family of four.”

To work out if you qualify for a GP visit card we look at your:

• Income.

• Personal circumstances, such as if you are married, your living situation and if you have any children dependent on you.

• Certain expenses.

• If your income after expenses is below a certain financial threshold for your family size.

Annual savings of approximately €600 for a family of four, €300 for a family of two and €200 for an individual can be achieved.

Minister for Health Jennifer Carroll MacNeill said: “Good health begins with good access. We know that the cost of GP consultations can sometimes discourage people from seeking help when they need it. For those eligible for a GP Visit Card, it removes this obstacle and helps support individuals and families in managing their health proactively.

“GP Visit Cards for people aged from 8 to 69 are means tested. Your income, personal circumstances and your expenses are taken into account in an application to see if you qualify.

“I’d particularly like to encourage students and parents whose children are pursuing third level education to have a conversation about applying for a GP Visit Card. Eligibility is determined based on the individual income of the applicant, and some students may not be aware that they qualify. The application process is accessible and can be completed on the HSE website.”
