Works advance for New Primary School in Kanturk

Works advance for New Primary School in Kanturk

North Cork Fine Gael Councillor John Paul O’ Shea this week received confirmation from the Office of the Minister for Education Richard Bruton, TD that works on advancing the construction of the New Primary School in Kanturk are progressing well.

Enabling Works commenced last week on the site for the New Primary School in Kanturk. Cumnor Construction were awarded the contract for the enabling works which is estimated to take five weeks to complete. Following these works, inspections will be carried out by Cork County Council and the ESB to ensure all enabling works including the associated cable installation works have been completed correctly.

In relation to the main building project, the OPW have confirmed to the Department of Education that they are in the final stages of finalising the documents for the commencement of the process of prequalifying contractors. This is expected to take place in early October and should take 6-8 weeks to complete. It is expected that the tendering for construction of the new School will take place in Q1 2019 and once this is finalised, the entire build will take 14 months approximately to be carried out.

Welcoming confirmation from the Department of Education on the new School in Kanturk, Cllr. O’ Shea said “We now have official confirmation of the timelines involved for the construction of the New Primary School in Kanturk. This is an important step forward for the two existing schools and in particular, for the pupils, staff and parents of the both Schools who have been waiting for so long for developments here. I along with my Municipa District colleague Cllr. Gerard Murphy are glad Minister Bruton’s Office is now in a position to confirm this timeframe. It would indeed be my hope that the people of Kanturk would be welcoming the children from St. Colman’s Boys NS & the Convent of Mercy NS to our new School for the new academic year in September 2020. As a local representative, I will do my utmost to ensure this development happens as soon as is practically possible”.
