Cork North West Fine Gael TD John Paul O’Shea has welcomed an update given by the HSE South West on the development of a new Surgical Hub at Cork University Hospital. The HSE confirmed the Hub will open in late September 2026, describing it as a major investment in healthcare capacity and patient care across Cork and the wider region.
The new state-of-the-art Surgical Hub will operate six days a week from 8am to 8pm and is expected to facilitate up to 20,000 procedures annually. The facility will also be supported by the recruitment of 125 new staff, significantly expanding surgical capacity and helping to reduce waiting lists.
Welcoming the development, Deputy O’Shea said, “This is a hugely positive announcement for patients and healthcare services across Cork and the wider Munster region. The opening of this new Surgical Hub represents a major step forward in improving access to care, increasing surgical capacity, and reducing waiting times for thousands of patients.”
Deputy O’Shea noted that the extended operating hours and increased staffing levels will allow more procedures to be carried out in a dedicated and efficient setting.
“Operating six days a week from 8am to 8pm will ensure that the facility can maximise capacity and deliver faster treatment for patients. The recruitment of 125 additional staff is also extremely welcome and reflects the scale and ambition of this important investment.”

The Cork North West TD said the new hub will play a key role in easing pressure on existing hospital services and improving patient outcomes.
“Dedicated surgical hubs are an important part of modernising our healthcare system. By separating scheduled procedures from emergency care pressures, we can improve efficiency, reduce cancellations, and ensure patients receive treatment more quickly.”
Deputy O’Shea also paid tribute to healthcare workers and hospital management involved in delivering the project.
“Our healthcare staff continue to work under enormous pressure, and investments like this are essential in supporting them to deliver high-quality care. I want to acknowledge the commitment and effort of everyone involved in bringing this project to completion.”
The Fine Gael TD said the announcement demonstrates the Government’s continued commitment to strengthening healthcare infrastructure and expanding capacity across the public health service.
“This facility will make a real and lasting difference for patients and families across Cork and beyond. It is a significant investment in the future of healthcare in our region.”
Concluding, Deputy O’Shea said, “I look forward to seeing the Surgical Hub open its doors in September and to the positive impact it will have in improving patient care, reducing waiting lists, and supporting our healthcare system long into the future.”
