Fine Gael Agriculture Committee Launches Report on Future of CAP

Fine Gael Agriculture Committee Launches Report on Future of CAP

Cork North West Fine Gael TD, Deputy John Paul O’Shea has welcomed the publication of the new report from Fine Gael’s Agriculture Committee outlining the party’s priorities for the next Common Agricultural Policy (CAP), describing it as “a strong and clear statement of support for Irish farmers and rural communities.”

The report, which was formally adopted by the Fine Gael Parliamentary Party and launched in Mitchelstown by Fine Gael Agriculture Committee Chairman Deputy Noel McCarthy and MEP Seán Kelly, sets out key priorities for the next CAP under the upcoming EU Multiannual Financial Framework (MFF).

Deputy O’Shea, who is a member of the Fine Gael Agriculture Committee, said maintaining a standalone CAP with payments linked to inflation is essential to protect farm incomes and ensure the long-term sustainability of Irish agriculture.

“Farmers across Cork and Ireland are facing rising costs and increasing pressures. It is vital that the next CAP is properly funded and that payments keep pace with inflation so that farming families can continue to produce high-quality food while supporting rural economies,” Deputy O’Shea said.

“I want to acknowledge the work of Deputy Noel McCarthy as Chair of the Fine Gael Agriculture Committee in leading the preparation of this important report, alongside the extensive engagement carried out with farming organisations and stakeholders across the sector.”

Deputy O’Shea said he strongly welcomed the focus in the report on supporting active farmers, reducing unnecessary bureaucracy and ensuring that environmental schemes provide genuine financial incentives for farmers participating in them.

The Fine Gael report also calls for expanded access to credits and supports for young farmers and a more simplified audit and payment system.

“We need to ensure the next generation of farmers are supported and encouraged to remain in the sector. Young farmers are critical to the future of Irish agriculture and rural Ireland, and practical supports through CAP will play an important role in that,” Deputy O’Shea added.

“This report clearly reflects the views and concerns being raised by farmers on the ground. Ireland’s agriculture sector plays a vital role not only in food production but also in sustaining rural communities and contributing to the wider economy.

“As Ireland prepares for important negotiations at EU level, Fine Gael is sending a clear message that Irish farmers must remain at the heart of the next CAP,” Deputy O’Shea concluded.
