Cork County Receives Funding From 2017 Outdoor Recreation Infrastructure Scheme

Cork County Receives Funding From 2017 Outdoor Recreation Infrastructure Scheme

Cork County Council has been notified of funding for a number of projects under the 2017 Outdoor Recreation Infrastructure Scheme in recent day by the Department of Rural and Community Development. The Scheme provides for the development of new outdoor recreational infrastructure and the maintenance, enhancement and promotion of existing outdoor recreational infrastructure.

In North Cork, Mallow’s Sli Na Slainte 3.4km loop walk is to receive minor repair works and improved signage while the Killavullen Loop Upgrade, Ballard Waterfall Trail Upgrade & Blackwater Way will all receive marketing assistance.

Within the county, a total of 12 projects have received funding of up to €10,000 each which will involve Cork County Council working with local communities to enhance local amenities, demonstrating the strong working relationship between the Council and local groups. In addition to these projects, €1 million has been awarded to the Cork Harbour Greenway project where it is proposed to extend existing greenway facilities by commencing the development of a link that will connect Glenbrook to Carrigaline to provide for a harbour-long greenway.

Commenting on the announcement today, Cllr. Declan Hurley, Mayor of the County of Cork, welcomed the funding award, noting the positive contribution that investment in such amenities makes to local communities as well as to the tourism potential of the county.

“Securing funding of € 1 million for the Cork Harbour Greenway project is a significant step towards the development of the link that will connect the greenway paths between Carrigaline and Crosshaven and between Passage West and the City for the benefit of local communities, wider Metropolitan Cork and visitors to the county.”
