Cork North West FG candidate sets out party vision to give children the best start in life
Fine Gael has outlined a bold new plan to support families and improve outcomes for children across Cork, a Fine Gael General Election Candidate has said.
The party will cap childcare costs at €200 per month per child, with a maximum of €600 for larger families, and create 30,000 new public childcare places nationwide to ensure every family has access to quality, affordable care.
Councillor John Paul O’Shea said: “Our plan will make a real difference for families in Cork, from capping childcare costs to creating thousands of new public childcare places across the country.
“Affordable, accessible childcare in Local Authority and State-owned buildings, with public services available full days, 52 weeks a year, including after-school care that working parents can count on.
“We will introduce a double child benefit payment every August from now on will help with back-to-school costs and extend Hot School Meals to tackle holiday hunger. We’ll also introduce free GP care for all under-18s and extend the Free Travel Pass to children with disabilities.
“When parents take time off to care for their children, we want them to do so without financial worry. That’s why we’ll introduce a pay-related Parents Benefit, ensuring families can spend time together.
“To ensure quality care, we’re boosting support for childcare professionals, with a full review of wages to reflect their dedication. For parents of young children, we’re adding an extra free hour of care each day in the second Early Childhood Care and Education (ECCE) year.
“This plan will transform the childcare landscape in Cork. Capping costs, expanding access, and setting up public childcare facilities means families finally get the support they need. For private providers facing challenges in Cork, we’ll offer a means of joining the public model, ensuring families don’t lose access.
“Fine Gael is committed to protecting every child. We’ll strengthen Tusla’s powers to prevent violence, secure more funding for vital staff, and push forward the Assisted Human Reproduction Regulatory Authority and we’ll give every newborn a Baby Box with essentials to ensure a fair start in life.
“Every measure we’re taking is about building a brighter, fairer future for Ireland’s children, families, and communities. With this plan, Fine Gael is setting the stage for a strong start, a stable home, and the peace of mind every family across Cork deserves,” Cllr. O’Shea concluded.
