Over the past few months Fine Gael has taken action to address the influx of migration into the country.
Cllr. John Paul O’Shea, who is running for Fine Gael in the General Election in Cork North West said; “I believe in that this country; people really are full of two things: compassion and common sense. And they want a migration system does that as well. That is fair, that helps people who need help, but is also firm in making sure the rules are enforced.”
“I’m really pleased that we have an update from the Minister for Justice, Helen McEntee, our Deputy Leader, that shows we’re making a lot of progress when it comes to making sure rules are applied, applied efficiently in relation to our migration system.
“Figures now show that the number of deportation orders issued in this country is up 140pc on a year ago. It also shows that the number of arrests for people coming into our country with false documentation is also up.
“It also shows the number of forced deportations where somebody refuses to follow a deportation order is now at a 10-year high.
“This is a good, compassionate country. We benefit from migration. Immigration is a good thing and is key to our economic and future success.
“But it’s also important that rules are applied, that there is a fair and firmness to the system.”
“Taoiseach Simon Harris and Minister Helen McEntee know the importance of having a firm but fair migration system and that the recent increases in deportations and arrests with false documents is only possible from the recent increase in processing and Garda enforcement of migration laws.
“I want you to know the progress that we’re making across the constituency,” concluded Cllr. O’Shea.
