Fuel Income Support Scheme for Farmers and Agri Contractors Open
May 07, 2026
Cork North West Fine Gael TD John Paul O’Shea has welcomed the opening of the new Fuel Income Support Scheme announced by Minister for Agriculture, Food and the Marine, Martin Heydon, and is encouraging all eligible farmers and contractors across Cork North West to apply before the closing date of Wednesday 27th May 2026.
The Fine Gael TD said the scheme will provide important financial assistance to those who have faced significant increases in fuel costs in recent months.
“Farmers and agricultural contractors have been under severe pressure due to the sharp rise in the cost of Marked Gas Oil, particularly during one of the busiest and most important periods of the farming calendar,” Deputy O’Shea said.
“I welcome the Government’s decision to introduce this targeted Fuel Income Support Scheme, which will provide meaningful assistance to farmers, forestry operators and contractors who have been impacted by rising fuel prices.”
The scheme will provide one payment covering the five-month period from March to the end of July 2026. Eligibility will be based on the use of Marked Gas Oil for the primary production of agricultural products, including forestry activities, during 2025.
Deputy O’Shea encouraged all eligible applicants to begin preparing their documentation and receipts as soon as possible.
“It is important that farmers and contractors take the opportunity to apply for this support. The application process is designed to be straightforward, with farmers able to apply online through My AgFood, while contractors can submit forms directly to the Department of Agriculture.”
“This funding package recognises the critical role farmers and contractors play in sustaining food production and supporting rural communities and local economies throughout Cork and across the country.”
Deputy O’Shea also acknowledged the work undertaken by Minister Heydon and the Department in bringing the support package forward.
“I commend Minister Heydon for working closely with farming organisations and stakeholders to ensure supports are targeted where they are needed most. At a time of rising operational costs, this assistance will help provide some certainty and relief for many hardworking farm families and contractors.”
The scheme will remain open until Wednesday 27th May 2026, with payments expected to issue shortly afterwards.
Farmers can apply through My AgFood, while contractors can download application forms from the Department of Agriculture website. Applicants seeking further information can contact the Department’s Direct Payments Helpline on 057-8674422 or email fuelsub@agriculture.gov.ie.
