Joint Committee on Social Protection, Rural and Community Development to discuss Energy Poverty

Joint Committee on Social Protection, Rural and Community Development to discuss Energy Poverty

The Committee on Social Protection, Rural and Community Development will meet tomorrow, Wednesday, 4 February, to discuss Energy Poverty with stakeholders.

The meeting at 9:30am in Committee Room 3 of Leinster House will be split into two sessions to hear from:

9:45am – EnergyCloud and Solid Fuel Merchants Ireland;

10:45am – Galway City Council NetZeroCities Project and National Economic and Social Council.

Committee Cathaoirleach Deputy John Paul O’Shea said: “Energy poverty is defined as spending 10 per cent or more on energy needs, with latest studies classifying more than two out of five households in Ireland as living in energy poverty. The Committee looks forward to discussing issues including alleviation of energy poverty, the fuel allowance and wider supports available for affected families and households.

“Members are also interested in exploring how excess renewable energy can be supplied to heat homes and provide hot water, and the development of energy communities to support individuals, families and communities in reducing energy costs and promoting sustainable energy. The Committee looks forward to discussing these and related matters with our stakeholders.”

The Joint Committee on Social Protection, Rural and Community Development has 14 Members, nine from the Dáil and five from the Seanad.

The meeting in Committee Room 3 can be viewed live on Oireachtas TV.

Committee proceedings can also be viewed on the Houses of the Oireachtas Smartphone App, available for Apple and Android devices.
