Major Investment in Social Housing sees 234 new homes for Cork

Substantial funding will address the urgent social housing needs across the country, according to Cork North West Fine Gael Deputy John Paul O’Shea

Deputy O’Shea said in Cork, 234 new social homes will be delivered as part of the national funding initiative.

Commenting on the funding announcement, Deputy O’Shea said: “Housing is and will remain Fine Gael’s number one priority in Government. The challenges are real, and the demand is urgent, but we are committed to delivering real and practical solutions to increase housing supply.

“The funding announced today for Cork, where 234 new social homes will be built, is a vital part of our ongoing efforts to address housing shortages across the country. “The delivery of these new homes in Cork will be facilitated by an investment of €35 million ensuring that local communities have the necessary resources to address housing needs.”

Deputy O’Shea also highlighted the €325 million being allocated to the second-hand social housing acquisitions programme, aimed at speeding up the provision of homes for those in urgent need.

“Alongside new builds, we are also prioritising the acquisition of second-hand homes, enabling local authorities like Cork County and City Council to quickly bring additional homes into the social housing stock. This strategy is about acting swiftly to address immediate housing needs in Cork and for the people of Cork, added Deputy O’Shea.

“This funding will also support initiatives that help prevent homelessness, with a focus on tenant-in-situ acquisition. It will support the most vulnerable, including older people, those with disabilities, and those transitioning from homelessness services. Today’s funding announcement reflects our ongoing commitment to tackling the housing crisis head-on with investment and practical solutions. Every day, Fine Gael in Government is working tirelessly to ensure that more people across Ireland can access the homes they need”.

“We will continue to pursue every avenue to increase the supply of homes and provide practical solutions for families, ensuring that more people in Cork and across the country, will be able to live in affordable, sustainable homes in the years ahead” concluded Deputy O’Shea.
