Major Step Forward for Charleville as Main Street Enhancement Plans Enter Public Consultation

Fine Gael TD for Cork North West, Deputy John Paul O’Shea, has welcomed the launch by Cork County Council of the public consultation for Phase 1 of the Charleville Main Street Enhancement Scheme, describing it as an important milestone in the regeneration of the town centre.

Deputy O’Shea said the scheme has the potential to significantly enhance Charleville’s Main Street by improving accessibility, safety and the overall public realm, while making the town a more attractive place to live, work, shop and visit.

“I am delighted to see this important project reach the public consultation stage. This has been a priority for Charleville for some time and I want to acknowledge the tremendous work and commitment of my Fine Gael colleague, Councillor Aileen Browne, who has worked tirelessly to help bring the project to this point.

“Cllr. Browne has been a consistent advocate for investment in Charleville and has worked closely with Cork County Council and local stakeholders to ensure this project continues to move forward. Her dedication to the town is evident in the progress that has now been made.”

Deputy O’Shea said the proposed relocation of the town’s bus stops, together with the provision of new purpose-built bus stops and bus shelters outside the Convent and the Credit Union, will deliver significant benefits for public transport users and the town centre.

“The relocation of the bus stops to more suitable locations, along with the installation of modern bus shelters, represents a very welcome improvement for Charleville. These works will provide a safer, more accessible and more comfortable experience for passengers while also improving traffic flow and enhancing the appearance of Main Street.

“I also warmly welcome the plans for a new raised zebra crossing at Smith’s Lane, improved footpaths, enhanced accessibility measures, additional hard and soft landscaping and the proposed improvements to the Park Road car park, which will provide additional off-street parking.”

Deputy O’Shea acknowledged that some on-street parking will be lost as part of the scheme but welcomed assurances from Cork County Council that it is actively engaging with local property owners to identify additional off-street parking close to Main Street.

“It is important that the needs of businesses, residents and visitors continue to be considered as the project progresses. I welcome the Council’s commitment to working with property owners to ensure suitable parking provision remains available close to the town centre.”

Deputy O’Shea encouraged everyone in Charleville and the surrounding area to participate in the consultation process.

“This is an opportunity for people to have their say on a project that will shape the future of Charleville’s Main Street for many years to come. I would encourage everyone to review the plans and make a submission before the closing date. Community engagement is vital to ensuring we deliver the best possible outcome for Charleville.”

The public consultation runs from 6th August to 4th September 2026. The plans are available to view at the Charleville Area Office and online, and members of the public are encouraged to submit their views as part of the consultation process.
