New Garda Station & HQ in Macroom

New Garda Station & HQ in Macroom

O’Shea Welcomes Progress on New Garda Station & HQ in Macroom

Cork North West Fine Gael TD John Paul O’Shea this week welcomed confirmation that good progress is being made on the development of the new Garda Station & Divisional Headquarters in Macroom.

The new building will incorporate a two-, three- and four- storey building around a secure courtyard with adjacent secure car parking on a green field site, providing gardai with modern accommodation and facilities – a far cry from the current situation.

Deputy O’Shea said “This is very welcomed news for Macroom. I recently raised the issue with my colleague Jack Chambers TD who is Minister for Public Expenditure; National Development Plan Delivery and Reform and he has informed me that the OPW who are managing the development of the division headquarters on behalf of An Garda Siochana at Gurtenroe, Macroom are currently assessing tenders and hope to be in a position to issue a letter of intent to a preferred bidder in the coming weeks. This is very welcomed news which I know which will be warmly welcomed in Macroom and surrounding areas”.

The archaic Macroom station was built around 1850 in the Royal Victorian era for the then RIC (Royal Irish Constabulary) and has been unsuitable for current day standards for sometime now.

Local Macroom Cllr. Ted Lucey (FG) also welcomed this progress report as received by Deputy O’Shea saying “This project is long overdue, but I am delighted we are now making real progress in the new Garda HQ for Macroom. I hope we can see the contractor on site here as soon as is practically possible as the current working conditions for garda are very poor. It is great to see this project finally coming to fruition”.
