O’Shea Acknowledges Growing Fuel Crisis and Urges Swift Support for Rural Communities

O’Shea Acknowledges Growing Fuel Crisis and Urges Swift Support for Rural Communities

Deputy John Paul O’Shea TD has acknowledged the serious and escalating impact of rising fuel costs on households, farmers, and businesses across Cork North West, and has called for swift and meaningful Government intervention to support those most affected.

Deputy O’Shea was speaking following confirmation that Government Ministers have been engaging with key sectors including agriculture, transport, and freight in response to the ongoing global instability arising from the conflict in the Middle East, which continues to drive sharp increases in fuel and fertiliser costs.

“The rising cost of fuel is having a real and immediate impact on families and businesses right across rural Ireland,” Deputy O’Shea said. “In Cork North West, where many people rely on their cars for work, farming, and daily life, these increases are particularly difficult to absorb.”

He noted that farmers, agricultural contractors, and hauliers are facing significant pressures as input costs continue to climb, with knock-on effects for food production and the wider economy.

“I welcome the Government’s engagement with representative groups and the acknowledgement of the seriousness of the situation. It is vital that the voices of those on the ground are heard and reflected in any response,” he added.

Deputy O’Shea also welcomed confirmation that a substantial support package is being finalised, in addition to the €250 million already allocated, but stressed the importance of timely delivery.

“It is crucial that this package is both meaningful and delivered without delay. People are already feeling the pinch, and businesses are under increasing strain. Targeted supports will be essential to help ease the burden and maintain stability in key sectors.”

He further emphasised the need for continued engagement with stakeholders to ensure that supports are practical and effective.

“I will continue to work closely with colleagues and stakeholders to ensure that the needs of Cork North West are fully represented. This is a challenging time, but with the right supports, we can help protect livelihoods and sustain our rural communities.”
