O’Shea Calls for Accelerated Progress on N/M20 Motorway Following Dáil Debate

O’Shea Calls for Accelerated Progress on N/M20 Motorway Following Dáil Debate

Cork North West Fine Gael TD John Paul O’Shea has renewed his call for urgent and decisive progress on the N/M20 motorway project following his contribution in the Dáil under Topical Issues last night.

Speaking in Leinster House, Deputy O’Shea highlighted the critical importance of the project for the Munster region and stressed the need to accelerate work on the business case, final design and planning stages during 2026.

“The N20 corridor between Cork and Limerick has long been recognised as one of the most congested, dangerous and inadequate national routes in the country,” Deputy O’Shea said.

“Every day, commuters, families, students and businesses experience long delays, unpredictable journey times and unacceptable safety risks. Communities along the route continue to bear the burden of heavy traffic passing through their towns and villages. This is neither sustainable nor fair.”

Deputy O’Shea said the delivery of the N/M20 motorway represents a once-in-a-generation opportunity to transform connectivity between Ireland’s two largest cities outside Dublin.

“This project is about more than just building a road. It is about building opportunity. It will strengthen economic links, support balanced regional development, create jobs, attract investment and unlock the full potential of the Atlantic Economic Corridor,” he said.

He also highlighted the benefits for communities across North Cork and beyond, including Ballyhea, Newtwopothouse, Charleville, Buttevant and Mallow.

“Improved connectivity will mean better access to education, healthcare, employment and public services. It will mean safer roads, reduced emissions from congestion and an improved quality of life for our people.”

While welcoming progress made to date, Deputy O’Shea stressed that the project must now move from design to delivery.

“2026 must be a decisive year. We cannot afford another five years of reports, reviews and revisions while congestion worsens and opportunities are lost,” he said.

He called for a clear and accelerated timetable for the completion of the business case, final design and statutory planning process, and for Transport Infrastructure Ireland and the Department of Transport to be fully resourced to deliver the project at pace.

Deputy O’Shea also emphasised the importance of meaningful engagement with landowners, farmers, communities and stakeholders throughout the process.

“Progress must be fair, respectful and environmentally responsible. Farmers, landowners, commuters, families and businesses have waited long enough,” he said.

During the debate, the Government confirmed that the N/M20 project is expected to be submitted to the Department of Transport in the second half of 2026 and, subject to approval, will then proceed to An Coimisiún Pleanála.

Commenting on this response, Deputy O’Shea said:

“While I welcome this confirmation, it is vital that these timelines are met and that no further unnecessary delays occur. Certainty, transparency and accountability are essential.”

He added “The N/M20 motorway is central to delivering balanced regional development, supporting rural Ireland and easing pressure on the Greater Dublin Area. Munster deserves modern, safe and reliable infrastructure. Our people deserve better connectivity. Our businesses deserve certainty. It is now time to match words with action and ensure that the N/M20 moves decisively from aspiration to reality.”
