O’Shea Encourages Applications for Animal Welfare Grants Programme 2026

O’Shea Encourages Applications for Animal Welfare Grants Programme 2026

Cork North West Fine Gael TD John Paul O’Shea has welcomed the announcement by Martin Heydon, Minister for Agriculture, Food and the Marine, of the opening of the Animal Welfare Grants Programme for 2026, and is encouraging all eligible animal welfare organisations across Cork and the wider region to apply.

The programme provides vital financial support to registered animal welfare charities to assist in their day-to-day operations, including the delivery of essential animal care services and public education on responsible animal ownership.

Welcoming the announcement, Deputy O’Shea said “Animal welfare organisations play an invaluable role in our communities, often relying heavily on volunteers and limited resources to care for vulnerable and at-risk animals. This funding programme is a crucial support that helps ensure their important work can continue and expand.”

Deputy O’Shea highlighted that, in 2025, over €6 million was allocated to 94 animal welfare charities nationwide, with grants ranging from €4,000 to over €2.6 million. “This level of investment shows the Government’s strong commitment to animal welfare and recognises the dedication of those working tirelessly to protect and care for animals. I would strongly encourage all eligible organisations, particularly those in Cork North West and across the county, to submit an application,” he added.

The application process for the 2026 programme will take place in two stages. Initially, applicants must complete Form A to demonstrate eligibility. Those who are successful at this stage will then be invited to submit Form B, outlining their activities and proposed use of funding.

Deputy O’Shea also praised the ongoing work of animal welfare groups. “Our local animal welfare charities are at the heart of communities, providing care, promoting responsible pet ownership, and raising awareness of animal welfare issues. Their commitment and compassion make a real difference every day.”

Further details on the Animal Welfare Grants Programme 2026, including application forms and deadlines, are available through the Department of Agriculture, Food and the Marine.

Deputy O’Shea concluded by urging organisations not to miss the opportunity. “I would encourage any registered animal welfare charity to engage with this programme and submit an application. This funding can make a meaningful difference in supporting their essential work.”
