A vital boost for rural communities across Cork North West
Fine Gael TD for Cork North West, Deputy John Paul O’Shea, has welcomed the announcement of a €15 million investment in Ireland’s post office network in Budget 2026, calling it “a vital boost for rural communities and small businesses across Cork North West.
Deputy O’Shea said the measure is a lifeline for local towns and villages, where post offices continue to play an essential role in social and economic life. “In communities from Boherbue to Ballyvourney to Kanturk, our post offices are more than just service points – they’re the heart of local life. They provide vital financial and Government services, connect people socially, and support jobs and small businesses right across the region.”
The €15 million allocation represents a €5 million increase on previous years and directly addresses the findings of the 2025 Grant Thornton report, commissioned by the Irish Postmasters’ Union, which warned that up to one-third of rural post offices could face closure by the end of 2026 without annual support.
Deputy O’Shea added “This funding secures the future of hundreds of post offices, including those serving rural Cork. It will allow postmasters to maintain existing services and expand into new areas such as digital access, financial inclusion, and public service delivery.”
Deputy O’Shea also called on Minister for Communications Patrick O’Donovan to work closely with An Post and the Irish Postmasters’ Union to ensure the funding is used effectively and sustainably. “This is not just about keeping doors open – it’s about giving post offices a new purpose for the modern era. With this support, they can continue to serve as trusted, local hubs at the heart of our rural communities.”
Concluding, Deputy O’Shea said Fine Gael remains fully committed to protecting and strengthening rural services. “Fine Gael will always stand up for rural Ireland. This investment is proof of that commitment – protecting local jobs, supporting families, and keeping communities connected.”
