O’Shea Welcomes Expansion of Rural Dweller Scheme as Cork Leads Nationwide with Most Participants

O’Shea Welcomes Expansion of Rural Dweller Scheme as Cork Leads Nationwide with Most Participants

County Cork has the highest number of participants nationally, with many based in Cork North West

Cork North West Fine Gael TD John Paul O’Shea has welcomed confirmation that the Rural Dweller Scheme will be expanded from 250 to 500 places nationwide from January 2027, following the announcement in Budget 2027.

County Cork is leading the way nationally, with 31 participants currently taking part in the scheme, the highest number of any county. Many of these participants are based in Cork North West, highlighting the importance of the scheme to rural communities across the constituency.

The Department of Social Protection has confirmed that 234 participants are currently involved in the scheme, which commenced in January 2026. A further eight participants are due to start shortly, with the Department expecting the remaining places to be filled within the coming weeks.

The Rural Dweller Scheme broadens access to the existing Rural Social Scheme (RSS), allowing people aged 50 and over who live in rural areas and receive a qualifying social welfare payment to participate.

Deputy O’Shea, Chair of the Oireachtas Committee on Social Protection, said the expansion would create additional opportunities for people in rural communities while supporting valuable local services.

“I welcome the progress being made with the Rural Dweller Scheme and the confirmation that the number of places will double from 250 to 500 from January 2027.

“It is particularly encouraging to see County Cork leading the way nationally, with 31 participants currently benefiting from the scheme. Many of these participants are in Cork North West, demonstrating the importance of providing opportunities for people in our rural communities to remain active and contribute to the areas where they live.

“As Chair of the Oireachtas Committee on Social Protection, I recognise the important role that schemes like this can play in supporting people in rural areas, providing opportunities to participate in meaningful work while contributing to their local communities.

“The Rural Social Scheme already plays an important role in supporting rural communities through work that benefits local organisations, facilities and services. Expanding the Rural Dweller Scheme will allow more people to benefit and help ensure that rural communities continue to receive this valuable support.

“With 234 participants already taking part nationwide and the remaining places expected to be filled shortly, the scheme is making progress. The planned expansion is a welcome development for rural Ireland.”

Deputy O’Shea added that he would continue to monitor the rollout of the scheme and its availability to eligible people across Cork North West.
