Nov 17, 2025
Cork North West Fine Gael TD Deputy John Paul O’Shea has welcomed the Government’s formal approval for the development of a state-of-the-art all-weather horse racing track at Tipperary Racecourse, with work scheduled to begin in the first quarter of 2026.
This decision by Minister for Agriculture, Food and the Marine, Martin Heydon TD, and Horse Racing Ireland is the final piece of the approval process.
“This is a landmark moment for Tipperary, for regional racing, and for rural Ireland,” said Deputy O’Shea. “The all-weather track will future-proof our racing infrastructure, support year-round training and events, and bring real economic benefits to our county.”
He added: “This investment, which aligns with Horse Racing Ireland’s Strategic Plan to 2028, will generate jobs, boost tourism, and create opportunities for local businesses. It reaffirms Tipperary’s place at the heart of Irish equine sport and heritage.”
Local trainers have also welcomed the news. “Work due to commence in 2026 with the aim of holding a full fixture list for the 2027-28 season.”
Under the plan, construction is expected to begin in Q1 2026, with the track completed by the end of the third quarter of 2027. The intent is to launch a full winter racing programme for the 2027/28 season.
Deputy O’Shea said he looked forward to continuing to work with Horse Racing Ireland, local stakeholders in Cork North West, and community leaders to ensure smooth delivery of the project. “This is not only an important development for the racing industry, but a real opportunity to drive economic growth, strengthen rural communities, and celebrate the country’s rich equine tradition,” he stated.
