Deputy John Paul O’Shea TD has warmly welcomed the launch of the Town Centre First Regeneration Plan for Kanturk, describing it as a “significant and positive step forward” for the future development of the town and the wider North Cork region.
The plan, developed by Cork County Council in partnership with the local community, sets out a clear and ambitious roadmap for the revitalisation of Kanturk town centre. It identifies key priorities, practical projects and guiding principles aimed at enhancing the economic, social and environmental vitality of the town.
Deputy O’Shea praised the collaborative nature of the plan, noting that it reflects the strong engagement of the local community throughout the consultation process.
“I very much welcome the publication of the Town Centre First Regeneration Plan for Kanturk. This is a community-driven vision, shaped by local voices and grounded in practical, achievable objectives. It is encouraging to see such strong participation from residents, businesses and community groups, ensuring that the plan truly reflects the needs and ambitions of the town,” Deputy O’Shea said.
The plan follows an extensive consultation process, which included a public information evening and hundreds of submissions from members of the community. Deputy O’Shea said this level of engagement demonstrates the strong pride people have in Kanturk and their commitment to its future.
“Kanturk has enormous potential, and this plan provides a clear framework to unlock that potential. From public realm improvements and sustainable travel initiatives to supporting local enterprise and bringing vacant properties back into use, this plan sets out a pathway for real and meaningful progress,” he added.

“This regeneration plan represents a major opportunity for Kanturk. It reflects the strong voice of the community and sets out a clear and achievable vision for the town centre. I am particularly encouraged by the focus on revitalising vacant properties and enhancing the public realm, which will make Kanturk an even more attractive place to live, work and visit. I look forward to working with all stakeholders to ensure its successful delivery,” Cllr Murphy said.
Concluding, Deputy O’Shea said the plan represents an important opportunity to strengthen Kanturk’s role as a vibrant town for residents, businesses and visitors alike.
