Cork North West Fine Gael TD John Paul O’Shea has welcomed the confirmation that the long-awaited upgrade of the N22 Macroom to Ovens Road has been formally included in the Department of Transport’s National Development Plan (NDP) Sectoral Plans2026-2030.

The project, which has now been included to advance to the next stage in the process, which represents a significant step forward in improving safety, connectivity, and economic growth in this area of Cork. Deputy O’Shea said the announcement is a “major milestone for communities, commuters, and businesses” across Cork who rely on the N22 as a critical transport corridor.

“The inclusion of the N22 Macroom–Oven’s upgrade in the Department of Transport’s NDP Sectoral Plans is a decisive and very welcome development. This route is of enormous strategic importance to Cork and Kerry, and its upgrade is essential to improving journey times, reducing congestion, and enhancing road safety for all who travel it daily.”

Deputy O’Shea acknowledged the ongoing work of Cork County Council, Transport Infrastructure Ireland, and local stakeholders who have pushed consistently for progress on this project.

“Today’s update confirms that this project is now on a firm path towards delivery. I will continue to work closely with the Minister for Transport and all relevant agencies to ensure momentum is maintained and that the project moves steadily through the approval stages toward construction.”

The N22 upgrade is expected to bring significant economic and social benefits to the region, supporting local industry, improving access to employment hubs, and strengthening the overall transport network across the region.

“This is an important day for Cork. Communities along the N22 have waited a long time for this progress, and today’s inclusion brings renewed confidence that this essential infrastructure project will be realised. I will keep the pressure on to ensure it advances without delay.”
