O’Shea Welcomes Landmark Launch of Women’s Sheds of Ireland

Cork North West Fine Gael TD John Paul O’Shea has welcomed the establishment of Women’s Sheds of Ireland (WSOI), describing it as a significant milestone for community development and women’s wellbeing both locally in Cork North West and nationwide.

Women’s Sheds have become an increasingly valued part of community life, offering safe, welcoming and inclusive spaces where women of all ages can come together to share skills, learn from one another, and build lasting friendships. Their growth in recent years has played an important role in tackling social isolation and promoting positive mental health.

Welcoming the new national body, Deputy O’Shea said “The creation of Women’s Sheds of Ireland marks a major step forward in recognising and supporting the vital role these groups play in our communities. Across Cork North West, we have seen first-hand the positive impact Women’s Sheds have in bringing people together, fostering inclusion, and strengthening community ties.”

He added that the establishment of a national organisation will provide a stronger platform for advocacy and future development. “Having a national representative body ensures that Women’s Sheds now have a clear and unified voice. This will be crucial in supporting existing groups, encouraging the development of new sheds, and ensuring their long-term sustainability.”

Deputy O’Shea also acknowledged the collaborative effort behind the initiative, particularly the role of the Department of Rural and Community Development and the Women’s Shed leaders who have worked tirelessly to bring the organisation to fruition. “This achievement is the result of strong collaboration and commitment from community leaders and Government alike. It is a testament to what can be achieved when we work together to support grassroots initiatives,” he said.

The official launch of Women’s Sheds of Ireland took place recently on International Women’s Day in Tullamore, with over 400 women in attendance, highlighting the scale of interest and enthusiasm for the movement.

Concluding, Deputy O’Shea said “This is an exciting new chapter for Women’s Sheds. It is essential that this organisation is supported as it grows so that it can continue to empower women, promote wellbeing, and build stronger, more connected communities across Ireland.”
