O’Shea welcomes LEADER funding for Millstreet and Bweeng

Cork North West Fine Gael General Election candidate Councillor John Paul O’Shea has welcomed LEADER funding announcements for projects in Millstreet and Bweeng in North Cork.

Millstreet Town Park Committee has been approved 55,431.66 for the refurbishment of Millstreet Playground, which will involve the replacement of all equipment and the installation of a new floor surface.

Bweeng Community Hall and Grounds has been approved 44,786.14 to re-roof the Community Hall in Bweeng.

Cllr. O’Shea commented: “My congratulations to both Millstreet and Bweeng on their successful application; these are two worthy projects which I am very pleased have been approved for LEADER funding.

“To date, there has been 78 projects approved for LEADER funding in Cork North, to the value of 3.12 million. There are currently another 14 applications being processed, to the value of 595,089. The application approval rate in Cork North is 72.7%, which is the highest in Cork and one of the highest in the country.

“My colleague in the Department of Rural and Community Development, Minister Michael Ring, has now announced over €98 million in funding for 2,678 LEADER projects in rural communities.

This increase reflects a significant expansion of activity over the last two years since Minister Ring introduced a range of measures to make the programme work better for both potential applicants and for the LEADER Local Action Groups which deliver the programme on the ground.

LEADER funding represents an enormous opportunity for rural businesses and communities that are in need of investment and it’s great to see the programme continuing to grow and make a difference for rural Ireland over the coming years,” Cllr. O’Shea said.
