O’Shea Welcomes New Employment Permit Quotas to Support Meat Processing and Dairy Sectors

O’Shea Welcomes New Employment Permit Quotas to Support Meat Processing and Dairy Sectors

Cork North West Fine Gael TD Deputy John Paul O’Shea has welcomed the announcement by the Minister for Enterprise, Tourism and Employment of new General Employment Permit quotas for the meat processing and dairy sectors, describing the move as a vital support for rural communities and Ireland’s agri-food industry.

The newly announced quotas provide 1,000 permits for Meat Processing Operatives and 850 permits for Dairy Farm Assistants and are available with immediate effect from today to help address ongoing labour shortages in both sectors.

Deputy O’Shea said “This announcement is a very welcome and necessary step to provide certainty and stability for two cornerstone sectors of our rural economy. Meat processing and dairy farming are critical not just to employment, but to Ireland’s export performance, food security and the sustainability of rural communities.”

He noted that the agri-food sector has faced persistent labour constraints in recent years, particularly during peak production periods.

Deputy O’Shea added “While Ireland’s policy rightly prioritises sourcing labour from within Ireland and the EU, the reality is that shortages remain acute. These targeted quotas recognise the genuine needs on the ground and ensure that businesses can continue to operate effectively while longer-term workforce planning is put in place.”

Deputy O’Shea also welcomed the commitment to develop an action plan with the meat processing sector to ensure improved workforce planning, training, upskilling, and workplace conditions. “It is essential that these permits are accompanied by continued progress on training, skills development, and improved working conditions. A collaborative, long-term approach between Government and industry is the right way forward.”

He added that the announcement would be particularly important for rural counties where meat processing plants and dairy farms are major employers. “This decision provides reassurance to employers, workers and families who depend on the agri-food sector. It underlines the Government’s recognition of the sector’s importance to jobs, trade, and the wider economy.”

Deputy O’Shea concluded by reaffirming his support for balanced economic migration policies that protect opportunities for local workers while ensuring key industries remain competitive and sustainable.
