O’Shea Welcomes New Garda Recruits as Garda Numbers Reach Record High

Cork North West TD highlights importance of strengthening frontline policing and community safety in the Southern Region

Deputy John Paul O’Shea TD has welcomed the attestation of 207 new Gardaí at the Garda College in Templemore today, Friday, 16 October, particularly the deployment of 20 new recruits to the Southern Region.

The new probationer Gardaí will be assigned to Garda divisions across the country by the Garda Commissioner, bringing the overall strength of An Garda Síochána to its highest level in the history of the organisation.

Deputy O’Shea said the attestation was a welcome development for communities seeking a stronger Garda presence, improved visibility and greater reassurance that their local areas are being properly policed.

“I want to warmly congratulate all 207 new Gardaí who graduate today at Templemore and wish them every success as they begin their careers in An Garda Síochána.

“Choosing a career in policing is a significant commitment to public service. These new recruits are taking on an important responsibility in protecting people, supporting victims of crime and working with communities to keep our towns, villages and neighbourhoods safe.

“I particularly welcome the 20 new Gardaí being assigned to the Southern Region. It is important that our region receives its fair share of new recruits and that Garda resources are directed towards meeting the needs of communities throughout Cork and the wider region.

“While reaching a record level of Garda numbers is a significant milestone, we must continue to build on this progress. Communities need to see a visible and accessible Garda presence, with sufficient personnel available to respond to local concerns, prevent crime and tackle anti-social behaviour.

“People want to feel safe in their homes and when going about their daily lives. A strong, well-resourced and visible Garda service is essential to achieving that.”

Deputy O’Shea also welcomed the Government’s continued investment in Garda recruitment and the additional funding allocated under Budget 2027, which is expected to support Garda strength exceeding 15,000 members in the near future.

He added: “Today’s attestation is an encouraging step forward, and I commend Minister for Justice Jim O’Callaghan, the Garda Commissioner and everyone involved in the training and preparation of these new recruits.

“We must maintain the momentum in recruitment and ensure that new Gardaí are supported with the resources, equipment and personnel needed to do their jobs effectively.

“I look forward to seeing the positive contribution these new members will make to communities across the country, including here in Cork North West and throughout the Southern Region.”
