O’Shea Welcomes Progress on Safe Routes to School Initiative for Knockaclarig NS, Canovee NS and Baltydaniel NS in Cork North West

Cork North West Fine Gael TD, Deputy John Paul O’Shea, has warmly welcomed the progress being made on the Safe Routes to School programme for Knockaclarig National School, Canove National School and Baltydaniel National School throughout Cork North West.

The Safe Routes to School initiative is aimed at supporting active travel by making it safer and more attractive for children to walk, cycle and scoot to school. The programme delivers improvements such as upgraded crossings, improved footpaths, cycle lanes, signage and traffic-calming measures to help ensure that children can travel to school safely.

Deputy O’Shea said this progress is an important step forward for local families and communities.

“I am delighted to see the progress being made on the Safe Routes to School programme in Knockaclarig, Canovee and Baltydaniel. Parents, teachers and communities across Cork North West have long called for safer access for children travelling to and from school, and this initiative is delivering exactly that. It will not only improve safety but also encourage healthier, more active lifestyles for our young people.”

Deputy O’Shea also acknowledged the strong engagement from school communities and local authorities in preparing applications and identifying priority needs.

“This success is a testament to the work of the school communities in Knockaclarig, Canovee and Baltydaniel, who have consistently advocated for safer conditions for their pupils. I look forward to seeing these projects completed and to the positive impact they will have for generations of children.”

The Safe Routes to School programme is delivered by An Taisce Green Schools, supported by the National Transport Authority and funded by the Department of Transport.

Deputy O’Shea concluded “This is another example of Government investment in rural and urban schools alike, ensuring that no matter where you live, children can enjoy a safer and healthier journey to school.”
